Pebblepaw bunched her lean body and edged to the end of the log, swiping out a paw and smacking Rosetiger on her side.

Hawkstep let his paws sink into the soft sand, leading Foxpaw to the center of the clearing. "Alright, we're going to work on fighting right away. These recent emotions with BrightClan and DuskClan might lead to a battle at any given moment." he meowed, refraining from sugarcoating it.

Foxpaw sniffed around the sandy hollow. Her paws padded through the tiny grains of sand. "Yes! Battle moves!" Foxpaw said happily, jumping up. She lost her balance and fell on the sand. She giggled

Dawnmist cocked her head to once side, "Hmm, I guess I can start touring while we wait for Windflight to catch up." She explained, padding around. "This is, of course, where you will be training for battles. You may do it solo with your mentor, or sometimes, you can do duels on other apprentices or with other apprentices to practice teamwork." She meowed.

Redstar padded into the clearing, letting her paws sink into the soft sand. She flicked her tail for Martenpaw to follow. "Alright, first we'll start with hunting. I want you to practice the hunter's crouch like I taught you. Silent, stealthy, and unseen. Keep your jaws wide." she instructed to her apprentice, spotting a mouse scuttling beneath a clump of ferns.

Martenpaw, for once in his life without questioning orders, crouched and crawled into the surrounding brush. He delicately sniffed the air and caught whiff of the mouse, as well as a fainter scent of a bird.

Martenpaw spotted a flicker of movement and whipped his head, making more sound than he should've. The mouse in the brush scrambled away.

Redstar flicked her tail, padding up to Martenpaw. "That's okay! It's my fault we haven't trained in a while, you're just a little rusty." she reassured her apprentice calmly. "Let's work on fighting instead," she meowed, positioning herself at the edge of the sand circle. "Try to get past me. Remember that I am bigger and stronger than you. Think." she lifted her head, chuckling.

Martenpaw growled. "You only gave me one hunting attempt." he snapped, sizing up his mentor. SoulClan, if we'd waited another moon I'd be bigger than her. I'm probably still heavier though. Ugh. He dove into the brush at his side, hoping to confuse her long enough to think of a strategy.

Redstar sighed, not bothering to say anything. I can't wait until he's a warrior. she thought warily, pushing her two front paws into the slush covering the ground where she was standing.

Martenpaw simulated the silent stalk his mother had taught him as a rogue, to move as quickly yet quietly as possible across the marshy ground, careful not to make sloshy sounds. He waited until he was directly parallel with his mentor, then sprinted out at full speed at her. He was prepared to dodge if she tried to hit him as he ran.

Redstar watched Martenpaw's every move very carefully. Her shoulder muscles buckled, and she fluffed out her fur to look bigger. As her apprentice darted towards her, she leaped to the side and rolled under Martenpaw, pretending to claw at his belly. She got up and shook out her fur. She purred. "Where'd you learn that? I don't remember teaching you that." she tilted her head, nodding slowly.

Redstar was caught off guard and knocked over by her apprentice. She quickly shot back up and stood her ground. "Good work," she meowed. "Do you remember the basic techniques I taught you?" she queried.

Martenpaw nodded, eye glinted. I can't wait until I don't have to deal with her. he thought, loathing for his mentor's negligence finally fully setting in.

Redstar suddenly halted in her tracks when she heard a sharp chirp from a nearby bird. She dropped into the hunters crouch and leaped, killing it with a single blow. She carried it in her jaws and motioned for Martenpaw to find some prey.

Martenpaw gave a swift nod and scrambled up a tree swiftly. He stopped and clambered carefully onto a branch, hearing a few inquisitive "caws" on the branch above him. He looked up to see a young crow pecking at ants crawling across the bark. He looked around to make sure the parents weren't nearby, the bunched his hindquarters and leaped on top of the crow. He ignored the mortified, pathetic cries as he slit its throat.

"Nice job!" Redstar praised, purring with satisfaction. "I think you're ready to become a warrior." she smiled, and pricked her ears at the sound of a rat underneath a clump of ferns.
She easily crept away from her apprentice and sliced her claws across the rat's spine. She brought it back in her jaws along with the chaffinch she had caught earlier.
