Redstar shuddered, remembering her kithood when she was abandoned. "We need to help them!" she helped, bounding across the meadow and following the kit scent.

Milkweed panicked and began mewling.
Acornwhisker bounded after Redstar. "Don't scare them! We don't know how old they are!"

Barley mimicked his sister, terrified of what these cats might do to them.

Redstar halted when she reached the lump of snow the two kits were hiding behind. She peered over and saw the shivering balls of fur. "Look, Acornwhisker." she gently beckoned her mate with her tail.

Acornwhisker padded over and lay down beside the two tiny kits. "Hey, we're not gonna hurt you," she soothed.
Milkweed pressed herself against Barley, still shivering.

Barley looked up at Acornwhisker, mewling with fear.

Redstar crouched down beside Milkweed, and licked some dirt off her fur. "Where do you think their mother is?" she asked Acornwhisker, eyes glinting with worry.

Acornwhisker flicked her tail a little. "I'm not sure." She gently licked Barley's forehead, mumbling soothingly to him. "It's okay, I promise. You'll be okay."

Milkweed stared up at the strange cats with wide eyes.

Acornwhisker's soothing words had calmed Barley down a bit, and he stopped meowing. He pressed against Milkweed and shivered when a bitter cold air swept over the clearing.

Redstar looked at the shivering kits with sorrow. "We need to bring them back to camp. They could die out here in the cold." she meowed, rasping her tongue over Milkweed's fur to keep her warm.

Acornwhisker nodded, then glanced down in surprise as Milkweed piped up.
"O-our Mom got caught in the storm," she whispered.

Redstar frowned. "Storm?" Suddenly she remembered the blizzard that had occurred the night before. The kits' mother must have been getting food and died in the cold. "Tell you what," she purred to the kits. "We'll take you back to camp and you'll have a nice, warm place to stay."

Barley pressed against Milkweed harder, his paws shaking. "But what about our mama?" he squeaked.

Acornwhisker licked Barley's ear gently. "We'll look for her, okay? But we're gonna make sure you're both okay first."
Milkweed relaxed a little, trusting for some reason. "O-okay."

Redstar gestured with her tail to Acornwhisker. "We'll be right back, kits," she assured them before leading her mate a little farther away. "Should we take them back to camp?" she meowed worriedly.

"They very obviously haven't eaten. And even if we did find their mother, I think she would be pleased to see her kits have been fed." Acornwhisker hummed a little. "They're too small to be out here long."

Milkweed glanced at Barley. "I don't think Mom is coming back," she whispered.

Redstar looked at her paws solemnly. "I don't think their mother is alive, Acornwhisker."

Barley frowned. "Do you think she's dead?" he whimpered.

"I don't know." Milkweed snuggled against Barley, sighing. "But I think these cats will help us?"

Acornwhisker nodded. "We can still have hope. But I don't believe so either." She licked Redstar's ear gently. "We can look after them."

Barley nodded, a shiver running down his spine. He hoped the two cats would take extra good care of him and his sister.

Redstar sighed. "Would you take care of them in the nursery?" she looked over at the kits snuggling together and closed her eyes, imagining how they would react if she took them back to FireClan camp.

Acornwhisker purred softly. "They can talk and eat. I shouldn't need to look after them for too long." She rubbed her head against Redstar's shoulder. "The Clan'll understand."

Redstar ruffled out her fur as another bitter breeze blasted through the clearing. "Hey, I'm the leader. They'd better understand." she let out a mrrow of amusement before padding back to the kits. "We're taking you back to FireClan, okay? You'll be much warmer and taken care of." she rasped her tongue over Milkweed's ear.

Barley stiffened at the older cats words. "W-will our mama come back?" he stammered.

Milkweed hummed a little, looking up at the two shecats.
Acornwhisker touched her nose to Barley's. "I'll look after you while we look for her okay?"

Barley nodded, still a little uncertain. "O-okay." he mewed.

Redstar picked Milkweed up by the scruff and waved her tail to Acornwhisker. "It's getting chilly, we should hurry to get them back to camp." she meowed through a bundle of fur.

Milkweed squeaked and purred happily, and Acornwhisker picked up Barley gently.

Barley curled up his tail, shutting his eyes as the bitter air swept over the clearing again. I hope these cats will keep us safe. he thought anxiously.

Redstar quickly shuffled through the wet snow and led the way back to camp.

Frostbite followed at a leisurely pace, not really thinking about where she stepped or what she was doing. This led to her catching her foot in a small divot, falling flat with a gasp.

Shard snorted at Frostbite's clumsiness. She stopped short as she picked up the scent of badger and backed away from the set, tripping over a root and falling halfway into a rabbit burrow so her hind legs were stuck in the pit.

"Badger's are pretty big!" Shard quickly defended herself with, "And tend to live in groups and also, kill cats quite frequently. Come on, let's get some prey then get out of here. Clan cats are mouse-brained."

Syrup lead the hunting patrol here, pausing for a few moments to open her mouth and draw in the scents of wild prey. Wow! This will be so much better then stealing twoleg food, or catching fish and rats, the brindled, young shecat nodded to Valkyrie, Crone, and Marmalade. "Let's spread out, that way we don't make too much sound together and scare off all the prey," She suggested.

Marmalade nodded, still not used to the hunting grounds here. He turned to the right and sniffed the air. Back near the marshy areas where he used to live, away from the clan, he caught frogs mostly and stole twolegs.

Syrup nodded, noticing Marmalade's nervousness. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be able to catch something!" She meowed, her whiskers twitching with amusement. "I used to catch fish, so I'm so good at hunting rabbits either."
