HTTYD: The Octon Iceberg

The floor was cold, that's what would wake her up every morning. Not the sunlight shining into her cave's entrance, the coldness of the ground. Avalanche, a white scaled night fury woke up to that every day of her life. Only this time it was different. This time instead of the floor it was a sound that woke her. Her ears pricked up and her blue eyes opened. What's that sound? she thought to herself. She lifted herself from her curled up position and slowly made her way outside, her wings folded at her sides. She stared out and spotted seagulls outside squawking and landing on the edge of the iceberg her cave rest on. 

She growled and chased them off, forcing them to take flight. A feather from one landed on her nose and she huffed, making it fall onto the ground and watch it drift away with the wind. Avalanche breathed in the salty air before the mist went away and an island appeared in the distance. Inut Island.

Orion landed close to his sister. He stalked over, making sure she could not hear him. How was he to speak to her? She probably thought he abandoned her like their parents. "What did the Seagulls do to you?" He demanded.

Avalanche's one ear flicked back, she had heard him before he even spoke. She glanced towards him and then her ears went back. "Stop following me." she told him with a huff. She wanted to spread her wings out and fly off but her gaze returned to the distant island of Inut.

Orion's tail flicked and he looked at her. "Is that any way to greet your brother?" He said, Imitating his mother. He laughed and threw snow at her with his tail.

Avalanche dodged it with the duck of her head and then she flashed a smirk at him. "Stop it Orion! I don't want to play right now!" she scolded him even though he was older than her. She turned her head towards Inut island and blinked. "I wonder what that is." she said and then spread her wings, taking flight with rather smooth motion.

Orion flew close to his sister. "Its Inut Island. Its a place I sometimes go to help the Vikings. Theres this viking that teaches others to ride. Her names Lily."

Avalanche looked a bit nervous since she hadn't met a human yet. "What do humans look like?" she asked him curiously as she flew, secretly still annoyed he wasn't listening to anything she has said so far.

Orion looked at her. "They have no scales, wear animal skins as.... uh scales and have fur on their heads. They walk on two legs."

Avalanche blinked her eyes and glanced away towards the seagulls flying around. She flapped her wings a bit to rise a little higher. Her gaze then returned back to Unit island, her eyes flickering with worry and fear. "They sound strange, Orion. Do they hurt us? What do they eat? Why did you help them?" she asked, she was too curious for her own good sometimes.

Orion laughed. "They are like us. They eat fish like us. They hunt prey like us. They actually work with us. Some ride us, but we are their constant companions."

Avalanche frowned a bit and once the island was close she landed upon the shore, her prints being left in the sandy beach. She lifted her head and folded her wings down. "They won't reject my like mom and dad did..........will they?" she asked him, pain deep in her voice.

Orion shrugged. "I have several friends who have been with their humans for years and they don't mind. They actually get more attention over the years."

Avalanche lowered her ears a bit and huffed, he could tell she was a bit worried about this and unsure if she should venture on. She glanced back towards the iceberg and flicked her tail. "I'm not sure if I want to meet your friends.......they-they'll just laugh at me like that Zippleback did once." she said sadly in response to "friends".

Orion huffed. "My friends are on other islands. I have no friends here. There are barely any dragons here anyway, they will have a spot for us."

Avalanche closed her eyes and huffed again. She huffed quite a lot these days. She took three steps back towards the water. "I-I'd rather not risk it, Orion, you can go there as much as you want just don't expect me to go near them. I trusted my parents and look what they did, how could I possibly trust Vikings?" she asked and then took flight. She would at least take a small flight around the island but it was daytime so she was hardly noticed now.

Orion laughed. "Oh don't be a minnow! They are cool! Who knows, you might find a human to hang out with!"

OOC: Avalanche has already flown away by now

Avalanche glanced down at him and sighed. She landed atop of him, play-fighting with him now. She gently bit her brother's ear and pulled on it.

Orion froze. "Oh shit we landed on the wrong beach." He said, staring at a human standing on the edge of the beach, eyes wide open.

Lily stared at the dragons. "Whaa... Who? What?"

Avalanche's eyes were wide as well and she quickly took a defensive stance, her ears going back and she was baring her razor sharp teeth at Lily. She growled and backed up, spreading her wings a little to make herself appear bigger. "Orion, lets get out of here." she said, voice shaking with fear.

Orion stopped before sighing in relief. "Its lily, the leader of the dragon riders. She doesn't have a dragon, but she doesn't seem to like any."


Lily went through her bag and pulled out a large salmon. She held it out to Avalanche. "I have never seen a white Night Fury. You must be very special."

Avalanche backed away further and growled. Her blue gaze fell upon the salmon and she gulped. She glanced towards Orion for help before she slowly stepped forwards but cautiously. She sniffed the salmon but then recoiled watching Lily's face and other hand nervously. Her heart pounding so much she felt it would burst. She opened her mouth a bit and then backed up once again. She didn't trust Lily at all.

Lily looked at the beautiful dragon. "Is that your brother? You two look so different. What is your name? I'll probably never know." She held out both her hands and held the salmon in both hands and lowered her gaze.

Avalanche's eyes were still wide as she crept forward and looked at Lily's clothing, not interested in them but to check for any weapons. She couldn't smell or see any weapons on her but she still didn't trust it. She stepped close enough to grab the salmon from Lily's hands and then back up with it in her mouth, standing there with the salmon stuck there until she bit it in half and swallowed it.

Lily smiled and held out her hand to touch the dragon on her head. She looked down and looked up again, a bit fearful.

At that Avalanche growled and bared her fangs again. The hand wasn't even a foot away from her face and she was growling, which was easily showing she didn't trust her.

Lily backed away frightened. She pulled out a.... It looked like a long tooth to the dragons but it was a sword and touched a button. The sword changed into flames. "I got this from a trader..." She said. She waved it in front of her.

Avalanche relaxed slightly at this and her blue gaze followed the motion of the sword and she slowly stepped towards it but went onto her hind legs to avoid touching it for a second. She was now a foot away from Lily.

Lily used something to get rid of the flames. She sheathed the sword. She pulled out a handful of dragon nip. She held it out to the dragon.

Avalanche sniffed it and her tongue rolled out the side of her mouth. She touched her nose with it, a smile spreading across her face.

Lily swallowed. "Well here goes nothing..." She murmured, closing her eyes and holding out her hand.

Her hand fell upon Avalanche's head and her eyes opened wide for a second. She looked up at Lily's face and felt the hand upon her head. She raised her head a little so now Lily's hand was on her nose. Lily could feel Avalanche's warm breath on her hand.

With her other hand, lily scratched behind Avalanche's ears. "Good girl. What's your name?" She asked, Still scratching behind her ears.

Avalanche's gaze drifted to the other hand and she recoiled a little. She glanced around to see if Orion was still here. "Avalanche." she said, not knowing if the human would understand that.

Lily swallowed. "What was that?" She asked. She crouched on the ground and drew a flower on the ground. "I'm lily." She said, pointing at the flower.

Avalanche gulped and didn't know how to explain her name to her so she tried to say it to her using growls. She made a pathetic "Rah-ra-lan" noise deep in her throat and that's the best she could do. She looked at the flower and huffed. She already knew what her name was thanks to her brother.

Lily swallowed, trying to make out words from the growling. "Rah ra Lan... Rah Ra Lan.... Avalanche?"

Avalanche panted at the last one and then nodded her head. She turned towards her brother and playfully nipped his tail. "Now you try doing that, minnow." she teased him.

Orion swished his tail. "Nah, I don't like hanging out with one human. I'm a wanderer."

Lily sat down on a rock and started drawing into her notebook.

Avalanche bit his ear now and tried to pin him to the sand. "Minnow." she said it again before biting his ear and using her wings to tickle him.

Orion laughed and playfully bit her ear.

Lily stood and walked down to the water, where she picked up a rock and skipped it on the water.

Avalanche let go of his and rolled over, making him let go. She glanced towards Lily as she skipped the rock across the water. I can do that! she thought. She stood up and picked up a rock into her mouth and threw it into the water, the rock didn't even skip once, it just went down. She watched and frowned.

Lily laughed and picked up a smooth rock. She skipped it five times.

Orion laughed at his sister. "I'm going to see if any of my friends want to hang out, see you later." He said, flying off.

Avalanche watched and huffed. She glanced towards Lily and laid down where she was, watching some fish in the water. She yawned widely and then licked her lips. She began wondering if Lily had anymore salmon and so she stood and walked over to her, poking her sides with her nose trying to smell for fish this time while accidentally knocking Lily off-balance.

Lily tripped, falling over, before laughing. "Fine girl." She said, pulling a salmon out of the bag. "I should have brought more with me..."

Avalanche took it and bit it in two before swallowing it again. She purred almost like a cat and sniffed for more but there were no more. Her ears lowered a bit before she looked at the water at the iceberg she lives on. Her ears went forward towards it and she huffed. The flicker in her eyes were sort of worrying before she gently grasped Lily's hand with her teeth and pulled her up.

Lily sort of screamed and clung to the dragon. "Put me down..." She said. "Now"

Avalanche quickly let go and backed up sadly. Once again she felt rejected and she made a whimpering sound before spreading her wings and getting ready to take flight. She flew off towards the iceberg.

Lily ran to the edge of the water. She watched as the dragon flew away and sat down, head in hands. "I didn't mean it as a threat.... I never meant to hurt you.."

Avalanche probably wouldn't return after today, but at least Lily knew where she was.
