Brindlestripe woke from where she slept next to Hawkstep. The horrible scent from the night before hadn't faded, to her displeasure. She couldn't suppress a shiver, and couldn't help wondering if it wasn't just the cold.

Doespring looked up from where she laid. Another restless night... Even if she tried, she wouldn't have been able to fall back asleep. So, she pushed herself to her paws and scanned the camp. Maybe she could hunt before the prey fled, if they hadn't already.

Fernpaw gradually awakened and stretched out on the moss padding, the seriousness of last night's happenings having not yet dawned on him. He poked his head outside the den and crinkled his nose as the foul odor that permeated the air swept over him.

"Couldn't sleep," he grumbled, "Camp smells like someone broke open an eagle's egg and left it to rot."

Martenstrike nodded to Doespring, trotting towards her. "Think there's any prey left out there?"

The leader snorted softly. "Sounds right. It's not hurting anyone, is it?" he frowned, hearing himself speak the question but his mind wandering to the hunting patrol that had reported to him last night. How unstable is the ground?

"Not that I've seen," he grumbled, "Unless some cats have died in their sleep it seems to just be an annoyance."

He nodded. "All right. I want to put together a patrol to make sure the land is still safe," he mewed. "Do you have anywhere you'd like checking?"

"Martenstrike said he was hunting on the northern slopes, so you should probably send a patrol there," he mewed, "I'd also check the peak of the volcano. Just in case."

Glowingstream twitched and wrinkled her nose as she padded out of the medicine den, the clinging scent making her nostrils burn. She glanced around for Tanglepath, ears flattening.

Littledawn kept her kits close, making sure to keep a closer eye on Havenkit, who kept attempting to escape the camp and explore the territory with the warriors.

Leopardpaw awoke and scrunched her nose, yawning and padding outside of the apprentices den. "Why is it soooo. smelly?"

Flintpaw cracked an eye open as Leopardpaw padded out of the den, before going back to sleep.

"Must be the volcano," Nettlepaw mewed, whiskers twitching. "Probably gonna erupt any moment now and bury us in stink."

Tanglepath trotted back from the leader's den to the medicine den. He spotted his apprentice and his joyful expression changed to one of unreadable serenity. "Glowingstride," he purred, "How are you doing today?"

Glowingstream relaxed upon seeing her mentor, offering a slight shrug. "I'm doing fine. How is Finchstar?"

Glowingstream twitched her ears backwards upon receiving a colder tone. "Of course." She moved and padded away, tail flicking behind her.

Martenstrike saw Glowingstream emerge from the medicine den and nodded a greeting. "Tanglepath send you to check on us?" he asked, not disguising the discomfort in his voice when he said the tom's name.

"He did indeed. Has he seemed a little off lately?" Glowingstream frowned and glanced back toward Tanglepath, fur rippling with unease.

Hollypaw opened her eyes and stretched, trying not to gag as she yawned and tasted the rather unforgiving scent floating around the camp.

Cloudscorch padded back in from the dirtplace, her nose crinkled in disgust, and padded over to the deputies. "Is anyone doing patrols or what?" she huffed.

"He always seems off," Martenstrike huffed, "I feel like he always looks at us like prey, or herbs maybe."

Tanglepath looked around for the deputies, eyes narrowed. Where are those featherbrains?

Nettlepaw scanned the camp for his mentor, frowning.

Finchstar padded out of the den after a few moments, his nose crinkling as the stench hit him like a wall, shaking his pelt out and looking around. Everyone seems to be awake...

Thorntail padded out from the warrior's den, the fur on his cheek pressed flat as he'd slept like a rock. "It tastes like mouse dung," he huffed.

Nettlepaw spotted Thorntail emerging from the warrior's den and casually trotted towards his mentor, nodding to him.

"Prey, I believe, is the more accurate description." Glowingstream shook her head with a sigh, moving aside so the warriors could pass her when leaving the den. "It's rather unnerving."

Timberblaze lifted his head upon spotting Hollypaw, padding over to the apprentice's den. "Still struggling with the smell?" He purred, chuckling despite trying not to gag himself.

Havenkit tumbled out of the nursery in a flurry of red fur, fluffing it up as he rose to his paws. He darted off before Littledawn could catch him, weaving between cats and exploring throughout the camp.

"I don't like how much Finchstar talks to him," Martenstrike growled, switching his fluffy russet tail, "I feel like they're plotting something. You're his apprentice, do you think he's up to something?"

Glowingstream flattened her ears and chanced a glance toward Tanglepath, looking away just as quickly. "I don't know. He's always been somewhat cold, especially when I bring up Finchstar to him. I try to avoid the subject entirely."

Floralight walked up to her brother, eyes and stature tense with exhaustion and worry. Her eyes were sunken in, as she could not sleep the night before. "Good morning. Do you want me to lead a dawn patrol?" She yawned lightly in the middle of her sentence, making her rub her eyes with the back of her paw.

Frozencall woke up quietly, curled around his mate. He untangled himself softly and exited the den.

Leopardpaw noticed her mentor from across the clearing. She padded up to him quietly. "Good morning. Are there any chores you need me to do today?" Her nose was still scrunching because of the awful scent.

Flintpaw's eyes darted across the clearing for his mentor.

Lionstream woke with a start, thoughts running through his head as he immediately moved out of the den, looking around.

Littlelily and Snowfall are still asleep.

Blackpaw is awake and eating from the fresh kill pile. His ears twitch every now and again.

Leopardpaw nodded lightly. "I don't mind. Do you want to go now of a bit later? Either is fine, just wondering if you wanted me to do anything for you first." Her paws shifted nervously. She might be too tired to train properly because of the nightmares she had had the night before.

Littledawn searched frantically for Havenkit, chest tight with worry. She nudged Seedkit and Melodykit out of the nursery, intent on keeping them close. "Havenkit is missing!" She yelped, fur fluffed up in her distress. The small tom had scampered out of camp, intending to explore all of the territory himself.

Glowingstream responded first, darting over to the queen and attempting to soothe her with promises of finding her kit.

Littledawn only bristled further as the medicine cat tried to comfort her. The normally quiet queen snapped venomously, tail lashing, "Really? I don't see anyone looking for him, Glowingstream." The medicine cat in question shrunk backwards and flattened her ears.

"I'll have someone look for him, Littledawn, I promise." Glowingstream mewed while the sandy tabby paced. She looked to Martenstrike when she heard him. "Havenkit is missing. He must have wandered off while things were trying to be organized."

Littledawn relaxed somewhat and dipped her head. "Thank you, Martenstrike," she mewed, sitting down and curling her tail around Melodykit and Seedkit. She muttered an apology to Glowingstream, the shecat only purring and shaking her head in dismissal. She trotted off to return to the task of checking on the warriors.

Martenstrike flicked his bushy tail, stepping lightly. The earth beneath his paws had captured the heat of the sun quicker than he expected.

Leopardpaw nodded and padded over to Littledawn. She sat next to the larger she-cat, and smiled down at the kittens. "Hey, um... I never found out who the father of these cuties was?" she whispered to the queen.

Littledawn flattened her ears and looked toward where Crimsonfang was, narrowing her eyes. "Crimsonfang," she muttered to the apprentice, shaking her head. "He has no interest in them, however."

Crimsonfang noticed Littledawn and Leopardpaw watching him from a distance, and bared his teeth.

Leopardpaw looked away quickly. "Why? I mean... if you don't mind me asking?" I'm so glad that he isn't my mentor.

Littledawn bristled and snarled at the tom, curling around her kits protectively. "He says this isn't a world for kits, and tried to make me choose between him and them. I chose my kits, and haven't spoken to him since."

Leopardpaw sent a sad glance to the kittens being protected by Littledawn. "That's pretty sad... Kittens are everything for me," she laughed, awkwardly looking back at Crimsonfang. She bristled as she realised that the large cat was inching closer.

Crimsonfang took a few steps forwards towards the nursery ominously, eyes dark and claws digging into the dirt.

Tanglepath trotted towards Glowingstream with flattened ears. "Did you check on the warriors? We need our Clan strong for leaf-fall," he meowed coldly.

"Havenkit escaped camp. Martenstrike is out looking for him now. I'm going to go back to checking on the warriors." Glowingstream turned and padded inside the warrior's den, trying to forget her conversation with Martenstrike about her mentor.

Tanglepath let out an affirming grunt, looking around the camp with a contemplative expression. We need to reinforce the walls of camp. If a kit can get out, who knows what can get in...

Finchstar's whiskers twitched as he felt the wind change, turning towards the north and sniffing the storm on the breeze. Hm. "Warriors! We need patrols going out," he decided to shove down his apprehension and look after his Clan. "Floralight, you can take the dawn patrol. Ivyfire, Flintpaw, and Stealthwater can go with you. Timberblaze and Thorntail, you come with me to investigate what happened last night. Stormcrest, take Cloudscorch, Snowfall, Shadowrunner and your apprentices to the Meadow, while another hunting patrol heads towards the border with BrightClan and FrostClan. Any questions?"
