Saffronflame snorted. "As if any cat would even want to have kits with me," she joked, winking. "But seriously, come on, it'll be over soon I promise." She glanced at the two newborns near the side of the nest and considered bringing Whisperspirit in so he could talk some sense to his mate.

She nodded slightly before seeing Rowanwhisker at the den entrance. Smiling softly, she felt another sharp pain and she pushed.

ic: Saffronflame purred as the third kit fell on to the moss, but was alarmed by the amount of blood. She motioned for Rowanwhisker to come over and lick the kit.

The russet tom quickly padded over and did so, pinning his ears back.
"How much longer..." Silverleaf asked, looking up at the two of them.

"Only one more kit," Saffronflame mewed encouragingly, licking her mother's ears in an effort to keep her cool.

She nodded, taking a deep breath so that she wouldn't give up. Finally, she pushed one more time, making the stick snap in two from biting it so hard.

This kit was covered in blood, and Saffronflame immediately started licking its fur the wrong way to get it warm.

Rowanwhisker peered forward, noticing that the kit wasn't moving. "Saffronflame..." he meowed almost silently so the deputy and queen wouldn't hear.

She flicked her tail to show that she'd heard, but kept licking, hoping that the kit could still be bought back.

Whisperspirit was still pacing outside, his breathing ragged and his head spinning in fear and confusion

Silverleaf smiled softly and pulled the kit close, settling it between her paws and resting her nose against it's cold fur. "It isn't your fault..." she whispered.
"I'll get Whisperspirit." Rowanwhisker mewed, hurrying out of the den and hiding the grief in his gaze.

"I-if I was a better medicine cat then maybe it wouldnt have happened." Saffronflame beat herself up, her eyes misty with tears.
One of the newborns let out a loud wail, demanding to be heard.

Whisperspirit stopped short when he saw Rowanwhisker emerge from the den. "What happened?" he mewed sharply, but didnt mean to sound, well, mean.

Silverleaf flicked her tail, resting it on Saffronflame's shoulder. "There wasn't anything you could do." She looked at Whisperspirit, moving her paws a bit as well as her belly to reveal the kits.
"Look." Rowanwhisker meowed softly.

Whisperspirit let out a small gasp, the sight of such small kits never failing to amaze him. "Oh Silverleaf," he purred, padding over and licking her ears ecstatically.
Saffronflame sniffed and wiped her eyes, smiling at her parents, then glancing at her adoptive brother with a wink.

Silverleaf purred slightly before looking at the kit between her paws. "What should we name them?"

Whisperspirit licked the first little kit's head. "Dapplekit."

Silverleaf nodded before seeing a tortoiseshell kit. Her eyes widened before they softened. "Ivykit..." she mewed quietly, licking the she-kit's ears.

"And Laurelkit." the tom mewed, licking the little brown and cream tabby kit, whom let out an indignant squeak and batted at Whisperspirit's nose.

Whisperspirit's eyes clouded over, and he sighed. "You choose." he mewed quietly. It was either my mate or my kit, he thought sadly, though nothing showed on his face.

Whisperspirit nudged the borage closer. "You should probably eat this then get some rest," he mewed, just as Laurelkit let out an agitated wail because she was hungry and couldnt find any milk

Laurelkit nuzzled close to Silverleaf, suckling contentedly.

Saffronflame laughed at his monotone. "I shouldn't tell you this, but we met medicine cats from other clans, called EchoClan and StormClan. One of them asked about a Rowankit, and that Starwinter would be happy to know that her brother is alive and well."

Laurelkit wriggled into the moss more, her fur only just dried out now, showing her pretty vivid cream and brown tabby patterns

He nodded, looking relieved as tears formed in his eyes but he quickly shook them away. "I'll hope I can thank her... And you Saffronflame."
Dapplekit yawned and pawed at Ivykit, her brown and white fur fluffy.

He smiled lightly and flicked his ears. "Well you're doing a great job. At least now I know that I still have family left." he quickly noticed the look in his eyes and added. "B- By blood! You guys are still my family!" hastily.

The medicine cat couldnt hold it in any longer, and almost fell over with the laughter that escaped her mouth. "I was joking, silly. I know that you didnt mean that." Saffronflame smiled, her eyes twinkling. "When those kits make it out of the nursery, youre the first on kit watch."

Saffronflame snorted. "I was meaning to give Silverleaf a break. That kitting was obviously much harder on her than when she kitted me, Poppyfall, Aspenshade and Wolfstorm, so she'll definitely need help. Plus, Whisperspirit practically had a mental breakdown."
