FireClan's Pine Forest stretches the length and width of their territory, only giving way to small meadows and the top of the Volcano.
Up in the higher forests the ground is always slightly damp but rocky, and prey such as a variety of birds and ground mammals are frequent, along with the occasional frog. There is less undergrowth here than in the lower half of the territory and less herbs, but more places to train apprentices.

Martenstrike led his apprentice, as well as the rest of the patrol, into the marshy forest.

Timberblaze glanced occasionally back at Hollypaw to make sure she was able to keep up with them. He purred to his apprentice, flicking his tail, "What are you hoping to catch?"

Hollypaw shivered a little at the chill wind blowing in from the moors. "I-I don't know," she admitted.

Timberblaze moved to hide her from the breeze, standing where it would hit him first. "We'll just see what shows up then," he purred, touching his nose to her ear.

Leopardpaw sniffed the air lightly, tail flicking back in fourth in excitement. "I think I smell mice! I need to touch up on my hunting anyways!!" She yipped, running off to the bushes. She shivered underneath her fur, but didn't let it bother her too much.

Martenstrike trotted swiftly after his apprentice, ears flattened. "You have to be quiet, prey that emerges at night has much poorer eyesight but much better hearing." he whispered.

Hollypaw looked around, trying to make out the trees that loomed suddenly into her view, and eventually sat down. "This is weird. Why are we hunting at night?"

Leopardpaw nodded at her mentor, quieting her steps and flattening down. She followed the scent of her prey, paws almost barely touching the grass as she darted forwards. The mouse was just within her reach now. Her eyes locked onto her target, her hind legs raising in preperation to pounce. Unsheathing her claws, she finally leaped. She stumbled at the awkward angle she was at, and she must've made too much noise, because the mouse disappeared into the bushes. She ŕolled onto her feet. "Darn, so close!"

Timberblaze twitched his ears and purred. "Some prey comes out more at night, and it's a useful skill to have when Leaf-bare comes around."

Martenstrike sighed, "You'll get the hang of it eventually," he mewed. He pricked his ears and heard small paws, a vole or some other nocturnal animal, emerging from a burrow under a hollow log.

Leopardpaw padded up to Hollypaw. "C'mon! It might be a bit cold, but isn't the moon pretty?" she whispered, eyes glistening as she looked upwards to the sky. "I love hunting at night."

Hollypaw shrugged. "I guess..." she trailed off, listening as she heard a rustle a few bushes away. "Bird," she mewed softly.

Martenstrike's ears pricked. "Nightjar," he whispered, "Be careful if you go for it, they have sharp talons."

Timberblaze scanned the area around them, nose twitching. He parted his jaws to scent the air, and padded slowly toward where he picked up on the scent of a vole.

Leopardpaw sniffed the air again. She trotted forward quietly, listening closely for any sound of prey. She heard a rustle in the bushes, dipping down so she could get a closer look. Inside was a fat mouse nibbling on the grass, completely oblivious. She grinned.

Hollypaw tried not to let her sudden fear show, dropping into a crouch and ever so slowly creeping towards the bird. She hesitated for a moment too long, however, and the bird escaped her leap with a loud raucous cawing that surely alerted all the prey in the area. "Mousebrain!" she scoffed.

"She didn't mean to, Martenstrike." Timberblaze stepped immediately to the defense of his apprentice, moving to stand between her and the warrior. He narrowed his eyes. "She's young, and mistakes happen. We can go to another area," he meowed, then looked at Hollypaw. "You can't hesitate, Hollypaw. Strike when you have an opening." The senior warrior purred, offering the young she-cat a reassuring look.

Martenstrike sighed and padded to Leopardpaw. "I'm not going to coddle you like that when you make mistakes, alright?" he muttered.

Hollypaw's ears flattened a little, and she sighed. "Maybe I should just go back to camp..."

"No," Timberblaze stated sternly, leading Hollypaw a bit away so he wouldn't be overheard by Martenstrike or Leopardpaw. "You will make mistakes, but that's normal. Ignore Martenstrike, and focus on my instructions. You're doing fine. I can't count how many times I scared prey away as an apprentice." The russet tom pressed his nose to Hollypaw's ear before stepping back.

Leopardpaw jumped back at the sudden sound of the nightjar, frowning slightly as the mouse scurried away. Terror filled her as she ran backwards towards the other cats, the dark suddenly seeming more ominous than before. She looked up at Martenstrike as he spoke, his words sending a jolt of fear down her spine. She didn't want to disappoint her mentor. "Yeah. Don't worry, I'm starting to get pretty good at hunting, anyways." She whispered back. "Maybe we shouldn't try hunting birds while night-hunting.. they're pretty loud when their necks aren't snapped." The attempt at lightening the mood was flimsy.

Martenstrike opened his mouth to say something, but froze as the sound of bird calls erupted around them and wings fluttered. "Something's wrong-" he yowled, being cut off by a horrible grinding noise and the earth trembling under his paws.

Timberblaze's fur bristled and he darted toward Hollypaw, urging her to move back in the direction of camp. "Something is definitely wrong," he called back to Martenstrike, flinching with the sound of the grinding. His ears flattened.

Martenstrike stepped towards Leopardpaw, fur bristling. "Stay close to me!" he growled. The earth beneath him shifted, the peat soil slipping away and heat blooming from the crevasse opening.

Leopardpaw stumbled, falling into Maretenstrike as the earth trembled beneath her feet. "What's going on?!" Fear erupted within her, quiet whimpers escaping her.

Martenstrike curled protectively around the apprentice and closed his eyes, flattening his ears as a high pitched scraping split the air.

Leopardpaw was small enough to completely hide herself within Martenstrike. She stared at the crack in the ground, going perfectly still and whimpers muting. She looked up at her mentor, eyes frosting over with unadulterated terror. Her words were soft as she spoke them. "Are we going to die?"

Martenstrike curled protectively around Leopardpaw. "I won't let you," he stated evenly. As moments passed the shuddering of the earth below them faded and grew still. It was too dark to fully see the damage but moonlight shone on patches of earth that had been split apart, forming deep valleys.

Hollypaw sniffed, then coughed and grimaced. "What is that smell?" she tried not to gag.

Timberblaze gagged on the smell, worry twisting in his chest as he thought of his mate and kits. "We should go back to camp," he meowed.

Martenstrike's hackles rose as the smell wafted over him. "We need to make sure the cats back at camp didn't fall into one of those." he mewed decisively, motioning to the crevasse.
