FrostClan | Northern Territory: Mountain Forest

FrostClan's mountain makes up most of their territory, and the tip is mostly covered in snow almost the whole year as it is the highest point of all the territories. The lower portions of it, where FrostClan cats sometimes come to hunt, is the area covered in smaller bushes and trees like pines, where less undergrowth grows. The air is thin however, and cats are told not to stay for too long otherwise the cold will make them fall asleep and not wake up again.

Poolstar lead her patrol through to the Mountain Forest, her fur fluffing. She scented the air, amber eyes trying to seek out easy to catch prey. "Let's not take too long. Try to catch at least something then come back to here," she stated, rolling her shoulders.

Crisppaw looked around. There was an eerie quiet blanketing the snow-capped mountain. It was too quiet for her liking. She waited for Fennelclaw to catch up.

Fennelclaw trudged up the slope, the sharp air ripping through the peaks helping to wake him. He sniffed, catching the scent of nearby squirrels.

Poolstar parted from her patrol, intending on only moving a small distance away. The scent of hawks lingered and she worried briefly, only to further realize it was rather faint. Reassured, she scented the air again, and instead followed the scent of some squirrels.

Fennelclaw spotted a squirrel at the foot of a gnarled oak twisting distinctively among the pines. He crouched down, shuffling forward, praying his large paws didn't disturb any loose stones.

Hailfeather stumbled over a fallen branch, managing to catch himself before he fell, but frowned and looked up at the clouds covering the sun before he was tapped gently on the nose by a cold fleck. "It's snowing," he mewed to nobody in particular.

Fennelclaw rushed forward. The squirrel noticed him, scrabbling up the oak before he reached it. "Fox dung!" he snarled, lashing his tail.

Crisppaw tasted the air. She also caught the scent of the squirrels and gently padded. She dropped into a crouch at the sight of a rather scrawny squirrel. But, food is food. She carefully placed paw after paw until she leapt forward. She barely grabbed the small creature by the tail, just enough to kill it with a blow. With her tiny catch, Crisppaw stood up with it in her mouth. "How was that, Fennelclaw?" she asked, looking at her mentor.

Fennelclaw sniffed. "Good catch," he mewed, tilting his head and looking at the squirrel with an odd expression. It was much smaller than most squirrels of that color were. "Must be a baby." he concluded with a shrug.

Poolstar ended up branching off from the scent of squirrels, instead managing to catch a younger crow as it landed with a flutter of its wings. She stood up with the bird clasped in her jaws, turning to look back toward where she'd walked forward from.

Crisppaw set her small catch on the ground. "Should I find more, or should we leave when Poolstar comes back?"

"I don't see anything else out," Fennelclaw mewed, peering around, "We should wait for Poolstar then ask her if we should keep moving."

As if on cue, Poolstar trotted back, a young crow clasped in her jaws. It was a smaller crow, but still decent sized. She set it at her paws then lifted her head. "I see you caught something. Good job," she praised, purring. She glanced upwards at the sky, fur prickling with anxiety. "I hope the others of our patrol have been lucky."

"Normally there are more squirrels out this time in leaf-fall," Fennelclaw mumbled with a frown.

"They might not be awake? I'm not sure." Poolstar shrugged and sighed. "As long as we manage to get enough to feed the clan."

Poolstar shook her head, gaze pained. "We have stocks from earlier in Leaf-fall, but I'm not sure how far those will take us. It's best if we get as much as we can."

"We can try digging some of the chipmunks out of their burrows," Fennelclaw suggested. A light snow had begun to fall, tiny flakes swirling in the wind and melting as they touched the ground.

"Digging out some chipmunk nests," Fenneclaw mewed, "There's not as much prey out as there should be, so we should figure out where they all went."

Hailfeather frowned. "I mean, they're hiding aren't they? If that earthquake scared us then I can't imagine what the dumb prey thinks it is."

"That's.. an excellent point. They're probably all hidden away because of it." Poolstar blinked repeatedly, glancing around. How had she not thought of that?

"None of us do. We should look for those chipmunk burrows." Poolstar sighed and shook her head. If they were having trouble hunting, then how were the other clans fairing?

Fennelclaw lowered his head and sniffed the ground, keeping his ear pricked for the tiny heartbeat of the animals below the earth. He spotted a small hole in the soil on the mountain's slope, nestled between a cluster of saplings. He approached it, hearing the sound of scuttling within. "Found one," he whispered.

Crisppaw perked her ears at the sound of the creature. They couldn't miss this, so the apprentice scanned the ground for exit holes the prey could escape from while the cats dug. A few fox-lengths away, there was a gap in the leaves. She crept over and crouched at the other entrance, meeting eyes with Fallowclaw.

Crisppaw nodded and looked into the hole before, her, her eyes straining. It was dark in there, but if the chipmunk dashed her way, she would be able to see it. She lifted up her paw in preparation to strike.

Hearing the frantic scuttling of the chipmunk, she froze every muscle of her body. She slammed down her paw on the fleeing creature. After making sure it was dead, Crisppaw murmured a thank to SoulClan and looked up to Fennelclaw. "Are there more?" she asked.

Poolstar padded quietly around, scanning along the ground to try and find more entrances to other burrows. "Over here," she called quietly over to her patrol when she found another, crouching by the entrance and straining her ears. The scuttling of chipmunks had her tail swaying slowly, happily.

Crisppaw turned towards Poolstar. She nodded and found another entrance to crouch by, not too far from where her leader was. She leaned forward and sniffed, the fresh scent of chipmunk wafting out. Her stomach grumbled.

Poolstar purred softly when Crisppaw and Fennelclaw joined her, beginning to dig into the burrow. The sound sent the chipmunk scurrying towards one of the other two exits.

Poolstar had began trotting back, then froze up as the rumbling started. "Take cover!" She called, keeping hold of her prey while shrinking against a tree.

Briarstem stumbled as the ground began to shake. She dove behind a nearby tree, keeping close to the ground as the rumbling persisted.

Fennelclaw dug his claws in, sliding on the icy earth. Snow fell off in clumps from the treetops as the tremors shook their branches. "Crisppaw!" he yelped, "Get low to the ground!" He looked around nervously, fearing an avalanche might start.

Crisppaw dropped her prey and scampered next to Fennelclaw. She dug her claws as deep into the ground as they could go and pressed against the ground. Her eyes screwed shut, she couldn't help but let out a whimper. It didn't help that she was away from camp this time, it only added to her fear.
